Membership

Members are bound by our Society Constitution; this is an agreement outlining the role of the STLD and the terms of membership. Our current rules can be found here:

STLD Constitution Membership - How it works

Membership Subscriptions & Value Added Tax

Membership fees are subject to VAT in accordance with VAT Notice 701/5. Our Membership rates are invoiced inclusive of VAT.

Although VAT is applicable, all our Membership subscription tiers are currently Zero-rated for VAT purposes, treating them as a 'Single Supply' of the substantive benefit, namely a subscription to our journal magazine ‘Set & Light’. Since the substantive benefit of Membership is Zero-rated for VAT, our Membership is sold accordingly.

In the event that it becomes necessary to reclassify Membership of the STLD, for both annually renewing Members and newly sold Memberships, as a 'Multiple Supply' for VAT, the VAT charged will be apportioned based on the VAT applicability of each Membership benefit.

Our application of VAT on membership products aligns with VAT Notice 701/5 - Supply of subscriptions - section 5.1.

Membership Invoicing

Forfeiture of Discounts

Failure to pay within the terms above will result in forfeiture of any discount.

Interest on late payment

The STLD reserves the right to charge interest & claim compensation of interest under the Late Payment of Commercial
Debts (Interest) Act 1998. The current applicable rate of interest is 8% p.a. plus the Bank of England's base rate.

Hardship support for Membership

We offer discretionary support for the cost of Membership for any existing Members who fall on hard times, those looking for financial support should contact the Membership Secretary at Members@stld.org.uk who'll discuss the case with Committee.

Sponsorship

As a non-profit trade body organisation, we have a large appreciation for our industry Sponsors, who help to financially support the societies operating costs, allowing us to continue operating for the benefit of both our members and the good of the industry.

Sponsorship is agreed at a unique rate per each of our member companies wishing to support us.

Sponsorship is invoiced annually for the agreed ongoing rate and we will not increase the cost unless agreed by both parties.

Sponsorship is applicable to VAT as per VAT Notice 701/41. Separate VAT rules apply to our overseas sponsors depending on their invoicing country.

Sponsorship is invoiced alongside an agreed number of discounted membership rates. Sponsor nominee membership is Zero-rated for VAT in accordance with VAT Notice 701/5.

GoCardless

We now offer the facility to set up a Direct Debit mandate with the STLD. This pre-authorises us to take funds directly from your bank in order to keep your account perfectly balanced, and hassle-free.

To do this, we use a third-party provider, GoCardless, who facilitates the Direct Debit Mandate on our behalf. Terms are only applicable to members opting to pay in this form. Your agreement is ultimately between yourself and the STLD but their terms as an intermediary can be found here https://gocardless.cdn.prismic.io/gocardless/85436c8e-ae31-4cb5-ace3-7743bcca0a77_Payer+Terms+of+Use+v0421.0.1.pdf

Direct Debit Guarantee

Your rights

Organisations using the Direct Debit Scheme go through a careful vetting process before they're authorised, and are closely monitored by the banking industry. The efficiency and security of Direct Debit is monitored and protected by your own bank or building society.

The Direct Debit Guarantee applies to all Direct Debits. It protects you in the rare event that there is an error with the payment of your Direct Debit, for instance if a payment is taken on the incorrect date, or the wrong amount is collected. It cannot be used to address contractual disputes between you and the billing organisation. Your bank or building society may review the transaction/s before the Direct Debit Guarantee is activated.

Direct Debit Guarantee

  • The Guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay Direct Debits
  • If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit the organisation will notify you (normally 10 working days) in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. If you request the organisation to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request
  • If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit, by the organisation or your bank or building society, you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building society
    • If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when the organisation asks you to
  • You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by simply contacting your bank or building society. Written confirmation may be required. Please also notify the organisation.

PayPal

We offer the facility for members to pay us online using PayPal. This is a third-party transaction handler who facilitates receipt of debit/credit and online account payments for us. Only members opting to pay in this form are affected by their terms. ‘Buyers’ are protected by PayPal in the form of their ‘Buyers Protection Program’, you can read more here: https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/ua/buyer-protection
